Coota Breaks The Silence Around Violence

Mission Australia raises awareness by hosting a White Ribbon Community Walk. We are organising a ‘Community Walk’ to raise awareness COMMUNITY BY COMMUNITY, WORKPLACE BY WORKPLACE & SCHOOL BY SCHOOL. Violence against women is at epidemic proportions.

Devastatingly, over 12 months, on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia because of intimate partner violence. The women lost are not just statistics – they are wives, mothers, daughters, grand-daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, friends and colleagues. Most importantly, they are people, and the impact of the violence perpetrated against them is widespread and long-standing.

This year, due to current restrictions, gatherings must be limited so we will be walking in teams of 20 or less, from the corner of Bourke and Parker streets to the White Ribbon Base at the Post Office. Teams will be given a starting time and supplied with white balloons and promotional banners. Local businesses may choose to decorate their windows to show support.

We at Mission Australia will provide ‘decoration packs’ to assist you. If you or your workplace would like to show your support to end violence against women, organise a team of 20 people or less to walk OR decorate your shop front. Make contact with us via email: hallsj@missionaustralia.com.au or call Jayne on 0428 162559. If you are experiencing violence or suspect someone else is, please contact 1800 RESPECT for advice and support. In an emergency, call the police on 000.
