Blues Take Tuggeranong on at Home In First Round

Blues 2021 leadership group Co-captain Joel Pearson, Co-captain Phil Bird, Coach Joe Scott, Assistant Coach Jacob Tiernan and Vice-captain MIck Knagge.

The Cootamundra Blues will kick-start their 2021 campaign at home this Saturday when they welcome the Tuggeranong Hawks to Clarke Oval for their Round 1 clash. The club would like to advise all supporters that the game will kick off at the unusual start time of 11am as both sides have commitments later in the afternoon and have mutually agreed to the early start. It will be a very different looking Blues team from the star-studded lineup that fell one game short of a grand final berth last season, with no less than 11 players from that semi final side departing the club during the off-season.

There will still be a few familiar faces lining-up for the Blues on Saturday with co-captains Phil Bird and Joel Pearson, vice-captain Mick Knagge and Assistant Coach Jacob Tiernan all re-signing with the club to round out coach Joe Scott’s 2021 leadership group. With so much talent departing the side, Scott is looking towards young guns Aaron Basham and Lachie Webb to stand up and help lead some of their less experienced teammates.

Despite the duo being just 20 and 17 years of age, they will be thrust into starting midfield roles and will be expected to contribute every week. If their preseason form is anything to go by, the pair could be dominating the Blues midfield for years to come. Young guns Bailey Synfield and Harvey Holt both impressed in the clubs trial against Murrumbateman a fortnight ago and look set for big seasons. Synfield looks at home on the back flank and possesses a lightning quick first step, looking to run his opponents off their feet at every opportunity.

Holt plays as a mobile mid sized forward and grabs contested marks for fun. He’ll look to form a dangerous combination with older brother Nick as the Blues main avenues to goal. Being new to the club, Tristen Beaumont and Brad McNamara have slotted seamlessly into the playing group and have already shown plenty of class and leadership on the training paddock.

Despite Tuggeranong having limited success in AFL Canberra’s Community grades in recent years, the Blues can’t afford to take their opponents lightly. The Hawks are a proud and successful club, who would like nothing more than to stamp their return to community football with a win over the Blues on their own deck. With limited home games for the season, the club would love a strong home crowd to turn out and support them.

The Blues canteen will be up and running with all your usual favourites on offer to help you through the day. So don’t forget to get ready early, come down to the footy and support the boys, then join us back at the Family Hotel for a cold one to help kick off the season in style.
