Blues Submit Application to Join Farrer Football League

The Cootamundra Blues are hoping to join the Farrer Football League for season 2022 after officially submitting an application to AFL Riverina earlier this month.

The Blues have been competing in the AFL Canberra competition for the last 18 years but are set to walk away from the long-standing relationship following the completion of this season.

Club President Todd Basham told The Times of the host of reasons that influenced the decision of the board, with a big emphasis on reduced travel for coaches, players, and supporters.

“We were basically looking at our options and have been asked by AFL Riverina to apply as they’re going through restructuring, and they have Cootamundra in their plans,” Todd said.

“Another reason is obviously trying to cut down travel time for our club.

“It was a whole club decision – players and executives. We think it’s the right one.”

Despite the encouragement, Cootamundra’s application still hasn’t been approved yet, with the process still within the early stages.

Although, a decision is expected by AFL Riverina by mid-December.

The Blues preference is to enter the Riverina Farrer League for the new season, with the venture also opening new opportunities for the club.

“There’s also potential to have netball sides involved as well as part of the move,” Todd continued.

If successful in their application, the Blues will join other sides in the Farrer Senior League such as Marrar Bombers, North Wagga Saints, Barellan Two Blues, Temora Kangaroos and Coleambally Blues, just to name a few.

The application to join the Riverina’s Farrer League is currently just for the 2022 season, with no long-term commitment or contract to the league.

The Cootamundra Blues played in the AFL Canberra Men’s 3rd Grade competition in season 2021, consisting of teams from Canberra, Batemans Bay and regional NSW, finishing the season in seventh position on the ladder with five wins and six losses.
