Longest Day Golf was held at the Cootamundra Club last Sunday, with a multitude of golfers doing their best to get in as many rounds as they can from dusk till dawn.
Whilst not everyone made it around the course for the 72 holes, many avid golfers turned out to complete as many holes as they could for the Cancer Council.
The Longest day of Golf is a challenge that raises funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services. Graeme Cheshire, Dave Earnshaw, Ben O’Loughlin and Lyal Twyford participated in the four-round, 72-hole day of golf and raised over $8000 in donations.
Graeme and his team started at just before 6am and finished slightly after 6 pm in their 72 hole endeavour. “We’ve got very lucky we’ve got some good sponsors behind us not only in donations, but in per birdie we have in the 72 holes,” said Graeme.
They were hoping to smash through last year’s total of 27 birdies, but Graeme and his team managed to get 27 birdies once again. “We had a lot of supporters come down on the last hole of the day and a lot of supporters all during the day as well,” said Graeme.
“We had fantastic well wishes and blokes being there for us,” he continued.
Joining Graeme’s team on the day was a team of three gentlemen from Sydney, who put in an amazing effort for fundraising and completed 63 holes on the day.
Complementing the course and their volunteer groundskeepers, Graeme said, “It was really warm out there but it was in good nick. It’s come up really good after all the rain we’ve had all year. It’s amazing how well it’s come up and credit to Johnny Stevens and Kieran Lachlan and all our volunteers, what a great job they do.”
“Thanks so much to our fantastic, generous sponsors and thanks to the boys who joined me in the game and everybody that supported us all the way round, it was great to see,” he continued.
Graeme and his team will be back again next year to hopefully beat their generous fundraising amount from this year. Major sponsors were Central Hotel Coota, Outback Bakery, IGA and Southwest Fuel plus many individual donations
