Local sports wrap: Little athletes compete in Lockhart

The Cootamundra and District’s Little Athletics competitors that attended the Lockhart carnival earlier this month.

What a great day Cootamundra and Districts Little Athletics Club had at Lockhart and District Little Athletics earlier this month.
The club thanked all Cootamundra representatives, and Ollie, Lochie, Tatumn and Olivia all did an amazing job in every event, coming away with some awesome personal bests and medals. The club’s next carnival takes them to Wagga on Saturday, November 5.

 

Coota to host NSW squash country squash champs

Cootamundra Squash Centre has been chosen to host the 2023 NSW Junior Country Championships, which will be held this weekend, on November 4 and 5. If readers would like to witness some top class squash, they can call into the Centre on Ursula Street and check it out.

Also, this is an excel lent opportunity to have a look at the building renovations that have now been completed and look fabulous. The club hopes to see some new and old faces.

 

 

Kookaburras flying high in SWSCL

Cootamundra’s under- 16s Kookaburras made it back to back wins in the South West Slopes Cricket League (SWSCL) under-16s competition on Saturday morning, defeating the Ariah Park Red backs by five wickets. Playing at Albert Park, the Redbacks won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 6/98 in 30 overs.
Liam Edis top scored with 36 for the visitors and the best of Cootamundra’s bowlers was Riley Meale, who finished with 2/8 from three overs.

Also taking wickets were Ryder Gillies (1/10 from 2), Liam Drum (1/6 from 4), Ben Randall (1/7 from 3), and Zac Scott (1/9 from 3). In reply, Ben Piffero spearheaded the run chase, scoring 45 runs, which included six shots that cleared the rope as the Kookaburras flew to a comfortable win. Now in second place on the SWSCL under- 16s ladder, the Kookaburras will prepare for a Round Four home match against the top of-the-table Young Cruisers at Albert Park on Saturday morning.

In the SWSCL under 13s competition, the Cootamundra Magpies went to the top of the table following a six wicket win over the Temora Stars at The Oval on Saturday morning. The Stars won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 7/108 in 30 overs.

The Magpies shared the wickets around with Harry Simons (1/9), Charlie Muller (1/17), Jett Johnson (1/8), Tyler Bliss (1/2), Darcy Wilson (1/16), Josh Ismay (1/5), and Anders Emery (1/8) all taking a wicket each. In reply, Cootamundra’s batsmen were in good form, reaching 4/133 in their 30 overs. Tyler Bliss retired not out on 23 at the top of the order, while later on in the innings, Anders Emery retired not out on an innings high 24.

Also making contributions were Jett Johnson (19) and Eamon Sutherland (15). The Magpies do battle with the Temora Colts at Clarke Oval in their Round Four match at Clarke Oval on Saturday.

 

 

 

Coolac rolled by plucky 

Tumut Plains has proven too good for the Coolac Highwaymen in their Round Three Elders Cup match at Coolac Recreation Reserve on Saturday, winning by 72 runs.

Plains won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 6/260 in 40 overs. Skipper Stephen Gill scored 112, and Nathan Butt added 69.

For Coolac, it was a long innings in the field, and the best of their bowlers were Sam Sharman (2/41 from 7), Caleb Piper (2/48 from 10), and Duane Shawcross

(2/63 from 8).
In reply, Joe Scott top-scored for Coolac with an impressive 79 runs from 64 deliveries, and while Andrew Keatinge added 35, the Highwaymen fell short when bowled out for 188 in 36.2 overs. Coolac will look to bounce back in Round Four when visiting

Tumut and taking on Wyangle in a replay of the 2022/23 Grand Final, which Wyangle won.
Also playing in Round Four will be the Murrumbidgee Mankadders, who host Tumut Plains in Tarcutta.

The Mankadders were well beaten in Round Three, going down to Adelong by eight wickets.

Elders Cup ladder: Wyangle 8, Coolac 8, Tumut Plains 4, Adelong 4, Murrumbidgee 0.
