Asimus Reunites With Rafter

Pat Rafter, Peter Asimus and Ash Barty at the Queensland Open.

Peter Asimus was one of Cootamundra’s most successful all-round sportsman in the 1960s/70s having been the local tennis champion on several occasions.

He more than held his own on the AFL football field, was above average in cricket, squash and represented Cootamundra in intertown competitions in those sports mentioned.

Apart from sport he was a talented musician and played in a local band.

When Peter and his wife Laurel left Cootamundra, they headed to Maroochydore (Queensland) where they purchased enough land to build a seven court tennis complex.

It was at the tennis complex that Peter met a youngster by the name of Pat Rafter, who frequented the complex. In time Peter saw a lot of Pat.

Earlier this month Peter went to the Queensland Open and was more than happy to renew the friendship that they had shared. Peter also got to meet Ash Barty. (Contributed by Clarrie Power).
