Cootamundra Veterans Golf Day isn’t slated until its 16th November date with a 9:30am tee off, but work has already started in organising a date for the fundraising event at the Coota Golf and Sports Club.
Cootamundra RSL Sub Branch are holding the 13 hole Ambrose to raise funds and awareness for local veterans.
Jeff Barrington, an organiser, said that its a great time with a great cause.
“It’s a new date and it’s going to be a shotgun start. It’s $70 a team or $35 a player. There’s prizes on the day and bookings can be made directly through the golf club or through myself.
“It’s just raising some much-needed funds for our local veterans, of which we’ve got plenty of, we are just hoping to have a good day to raise some awareness for some issues and funds for our Vets. It’s to go back into programs, back into the veterans drop-in centre down there in the main street and to go back into local support.
“We have done it before, two years ago. We went to do it again last year but it had to get cancelled due to poor numbers. We wanted to focus a little bit more on getting it right this time and having a bit more of a crack, a bit more advertisement. We had probably 30 local people come and have a look at it and have a go and it was good. It was a pretty good success. We’re looking to make it bigger and better this time around.
“As a current serving military person, and a member of the RSL Sub-Branch, it means a lot for me, I especially have a big focus on younger veterans in our community, not saying that the older veterans don’t deserve the same respect and accolades, but they are veterans too. We’ve got a big number in our LGA of younger veterans, and I feel that for us to be able to raise money and awareness to put programs and things in place to help them, whether it be with their mental health, or getting them actively back into the community, it means helping the community in the way RSL are proud to.
“We strongly encourage people to come and get involved. It will be a good day. We’ll have some activities going there on the day and it’ll just be a good chance to give back to those who have given a lot.
“Some of these veterans have given a hell of a lot, and it’s just a small token gesture to give back a little bit.”
