First Grade Finds Form with Dominant Batting Display
After navigating a tricky start to the season, the Cootamundra Bulls first-grade side delivered a statement victory this week, defeating Stockinbingal by a comprehensive 88 runs in the South West Slopes Cricket League. The win at Albert Park was marked by both resilience and aggressive batting, setting a high benchmark for the remainder of their campaign.
Winning the toss, Bulls captain Scott Meale made the pragmatic decision to bat on a pitch that promised pace but required patience. The start, however, was far from ideal. Early pressure saw the skipper bowled by Jack Caldwell for just six runs, leaving the hosts scrambling to stabilise their innings.
It was a nervous moment for the home crowd, who had hoped for a commanding opening stand. What followed, however, was a display of disciplined aggression that utterly deflated the Stockinbingal attack. Middle-order stalwarts Joe Pall and Liam Hamilton joined forces to orchestrate a stunning fightback. They batted with focus, rotating the strike effectively while punishing anything loose, compiling a breathtaking 117-run partnership that not only erased the early deficit but firmly established Cootamundra’s authority over the contest. Pall and Hamilton’s effort turned a potential crisis into a platform for a massive total.
While the momentum briefly stuttered with the dismissals of Pall and Hamilton, the tail refused to capitulate. Contributions from James Smith (46 runs) and Josh Purtell (28 runs) added crucial late impetus, driving the score beyond Stockinbingal’s reach. Despite the minor disappointment of two ducks from Paul Bean and Matt Brown — a rare low point in an otherwise stellar innings — the Bulls’ overall performance with the bat was superb, characterised by their sheer intent: they hammered 20 fours across their innings, proving their ability to find the boundary rope consistently.
Stockinbingal’s Chase Falls Short
Faced with an imposing target, Stockinbingal desperately needed a strong, cohesive batting performance. For a brief, electrifying period, they looked capable of challenging the total, largely thanks to the heroic efforts of Harvey and Nick Holt. The pair combined in a brilliant partnership that yielded 94 runs, offering the visiting side a glimmer of hope. They resisted the Bulls’ varied attack and showed exemplary technique and determination. However, the rest of the team struggled significantly to cope with the pressure applied by the Cootamundra bowlers, with the remaining batsmen collectively managing a meagre 13 runs.
Once the Holts’ partnership was broken, the Stockinbingal innings quickly dissolved, succumbing to the pressure of the required run rate and the clinical Cootamundra fielding unit. The 88-run margin was a fair reflection of the gap between the two sides on the day.
Double Delight for the Club
The celebrations at Albert Park extended beyond the first-grade team, as the Cootamundra Bulls second-grade side also secured a victory, beating the Bribbaree Rams by three wickets. This win was a testament to the leadership and composure of Captain Luke Ismay. Chasing the Rams’ total, Ismay took responsibility, anchoring the innings with a mature and determined captain’s knock, finishing 41 not out. He steered his side expertly through the middle overs, ensuring no unnecessary risks were taken and guiding the lower order to victory.
On the bowling front, the second-grade side relied on a collective effort that proved too much for Bribbaree. With a staggering seven different bowlers claiming wickets, the team depth and shared responsibility were evident, showcasing the strength of the Bulls’ entire squad.
Crucial Fixtures Await
The Bulls face a significant challenge next week that will truly test their early-season form. The first-grade side travels to Junee to play a side that just secured a five-wicket victory over Grenfell, indicating they are in strong form and will provide stiff opposition.
The second-grade Bulls face what is shaping up to be an early-season indicator match when they head to Temora to take on the Temora Renegades. With both teams currently standing at 2-2 for the season, the result of this fixture could potentially mark one side as the early competition favourite.
The Bulls will be looking to carry the momentum from their double victory weekend into what promises to be two electrifying away clashes.
