The Cootamundra Picnic Races are preparing for their 118th meeting, and organisers are calling on community support, sponsorship and fresh ideas to help ensure the long-term future of the much-loved event.
After a challenging few years, the committee is being open about the realities faced on the race day. While 2025 successfully saw horses back on the track, the two years prior were unable to proceed with racing due to weather conditions. Despite this, the event still went ahead on both occasions, with marquees, facilities, entertainment and hospitality in place. Even without racing, the costs to run the event remained largely the same. Combined with rising operational expenses, this has placed the event under ongoing financial pressure.
Dianne Williams, President of the Cootamundra Picnic Races, said, “Like many volunteer-run events in regional areas, we’ve been running at a cost.”
“This race day means so much to Cootamundra and the surrounding districts, and we are absolutely determined to keep it going.”
The Cootamundra Picnic Races are more than just a day at the track. They are a long-standing social event that brings together families, friends and visitors from across the region, and they continue to play an important role in supporting mental health and social connection in rural communities.
“In country towns, opportunities to come together and socialise are vital. Isolation, drought, financial stress and uncertainty all take their toll. A day like the Picnic Races gives people a reason to get out, connect, laugh and simply enjoy being part of something.”
The committee is now issuing a call to action for local businesses, organisations and individuals to get involved, whether through sponsorship, volunteering on race day, or contributing new ideas to help strengthen and modernise the event.
“We need all hands-on deck. Sponsorship at any level makes a real difference, as does practical help on the day. Even ideas – entertainment, promotions or partnerships – are welcome.
This is a community event, and it will only continue with strong community support.”
With a proud history spanning more than a century, organisers remain optimistic about the future of the Cootamundra Picnic Races.
“This event has weathered wars, droughts and floods,” Ms Williams said. “With the right support, we truly believe it can continue for generations to come.”
