Cootamundra Bulldogs’ first Sportsman’s Luncheon was a resounding success for the Club and served as the perfect way to start their 2026 season.
Bulldogs President, Stephen Howse, says they were more than a little apprehensive prior to the event but were relieved to have seen such a great turn out.
“It took a lot more organising than we had initially though,” he says.
“But it ended really well.”
Almost $4000 was raised from the 100 people in attendance, which will go towards new amenities and a bar.
“The money will [also] go towards things that go inside the canteen, such as a pie warmer and fridges,” says Stephen.
WIN News Sports Journalist, Tim Robinson (who is well known for his reporter work in rugby league, basketball and cricket) proved to be a competent and sprightly emcee for the event.
“Tim was very good, very engaging,” says Stephen.
Navigating conversations between former Australian Cricket Captain, Steve Waugh and former NSW Blues player, Robbie Farrah, Stephen says Tim rounded out their star-studded line-up well.
“Steve and Robbie were both excellent speakers,” he says.
“Both spoke individually at first and then were interviewed by Tim before being questioned by the floor.”
The former players both brought several stories with them from their professional careers, some half-known and some never heard before.
The future of the Sportsman’s Luncheon looks bright, and Stephen says they will look into doing it bi-annually and hopes to see it continue to grow with more participation.
“The Club has several other great events, such as the Big Bash and golf,” he says.
As for the next luncheon, Stephen says Steve Waugh has already expressed interest in returning.
Both players signed autographs and took photos with event goers.
The Cootamundra Bulldogs are now gearing up for their season launch at 3pm on Saturday, 11 April at the Golf and Sports Club.
