Race 4 Freddy’s Shock winning the Miller and James Real Estate Cootamundra Picnic Cup.
The sun has set on another Cootamundra Picnic Race and with preparations now underway for the 2027 Races, Cootamundra Picnic Race Committee President, Diane Williams reflects on another successful year.
“The weather itself was amazing,” she says.
“It was 23 degrees – no wind and the grounds looked magnificent.”
Although numbers haven’t yet been finalised, Diane says they saw approximately 2500 to 3000 people walk through the gates.
“It’s looking like it may be our biggest year yet,” she says.

“We had good racing on the day, and even though we lost one race, it didn’t affect anyone’s day.”
With everyone home to commemorate ANZAC Day, Diane says it was a nice opportunity to see families come together over a shared experience.
“Everyone dressed up for Fashions on the Field,” she says.
“Everyone always loves it.”
Perhaps the most important detail to note is that the entire event was organised by the Cootamundra Picnic Race Committee – a mighty team of six volunteers.

“To see what we pulled off, it was amazing,” says Diane.
“I really want to thank the committee and the sponsors.”
This year also saw a large number of businesses become sponsors for the event.
“It really encourages us as a committee when people put their hand up to sponsor,” says Diane.
“Seeing their confidence in us gives us confidence.”

Although plans are already underway for next year, it will also mark Diane’s last year as president after serving for 11 years. She has been on the committee for 28 years.
“I’ll still stay on to help,” she says.
“But this will be me taking a step back.”
Diane says there is now a call out for new members to join their committee to continue their great tradition.
For anyone interested in volunteering, Diane urges them to send her a message on their Facebook page.
