Cootamundra Tri-Colours advanced in the Central West Rugby Union South West Fuels Cup after a hard-fought sudden-death semi-final against the Condobolin Rams on Sunday, 9 August at home, taking home a win of 18-5.
The match was a tight, physical contest typical of country rugby finals football.
Cootamundra led 13-0 at half-time and maintained control through strong defence, with the score remaining low for long periods as both sides traded territory and physical carries. Commentary from the ground described solid defensive efforts, turnovers and periods of pressure, with the home side’s structure and commitment proving decisive in the elimination fixture.
A large crowd of supporters and old boys turned out, creating a traditional country rugby atmosphere. The club used the occasion to raise funds for The Mez Effect, a breast cancer support charity.
Co-Coach Hamish Pennington spoke after the match, “So, so happy and proud of how the boys put in,” he says.
“It was a massive hit out.
“Condo threw absolutely everything at us. Full credit to them. They’ve come from last place last year to the finals this year, and they should hold their heads really, really high because that was one of the tougher games we’ve played.
“We’re going to Harden next week and that’s an even tougher [match-up].”
The result continues a solid 2026 campaign for the red, gold and black. Earlier in the season the Tri-Colours had defeated Condobolin comprehensively in round two, with standout contributions including tries from Paddy Cameron and winger Aloalii Setu, plus strong work from the forward pack including Cameron Stanley. That earlier win highlighted Coota’s ability to capitalise on limited opportunities and hold firm in defence even when the visitors held significant possession.
Condobolin, who had fought hard all year to reach the finals stage, showed resilience but could not break down the home defence sufficiently. The Rams’ season had been built on hard work and local commitment, making the trip to Cootamundra a significant milestone for the club.
The Tri-Colours now progress deeper into the finals series, while Condobolin’s 2026 campaign ends with pride in having reached the knockout stages. The Tri-Colours will head to Harden this Saturday to take on the Red Devils to find out who will face the Boorowa Goldies in the Grand Final, kick off 3:15pm.
