The Coota Tri Colours are continuing their march towards a potential Grand Final with improved chances after a convincing 60-point thumping of West Wyalong.
Co-Coach Hamish Pennington said, “We had a big win against West Wyalong 61-5 at West Wyalong.”
“They had Old Boys Day too, so that was probably a bit embarrassing for the poor buggers, but anyway, they put on a good show.
“The score definitely didn’t reflect how it was, it was tight until the last 20 minutes and we probably scored 4 or 5 tries to really run away with the game. So, it was a lot tougher than the scoreboard looked, that’s for sure.
“That means that we finished 3rd on the ladder.
“That puts us in 3rd position against Condo. It’s a Coota home semi-final for us, which is awesome.”
Pennington scored the first try for the Tri Colours and although he would like to spend more time on his kicking, coaching others takes time.
“I’ve still got the kicking duty. I haven’t lost that,” he said.
“We scored nine tries and five conversions. Pennington has been one of the more accurate and consistent kickers in the comp over a number of years.
“Last year I was leading points scorer for the comp. I probably haven’t carried the form from last year into this year as I haven’t done the training or put the time and effort in as I did last year. Probably focussing more on the coaching than I am on a game, but [I] can’t do everything.
“I scored a lot of tries last year and I think I scored my first one on Saturday. It’s a good time to avoid the nudie run though.”
Pennington and the Coota squad are the three coloured dark horses who have reared their heads at the right time of the year. A premiership is on the cards.“It’s going to be a battle when it comes to who’s going to win this because you’ve got Harden v Boorowa and they are at Boorowa,” he said.
“The winner gets a home grand final with a week off. I’d rather play Boorowa than Harden. The Devils are so unpredictable Harden just with the speed, and we were very dominant against Boorowa.
“We were a lot more dominant against Boorowa than we were against Harden. “We’ve got an awesome bench, we’ve nearly got a starting 15 on the bench. We have had a meeting to try to work out what we will do. Player numbers is a good problem because we’ve gone from having no one to too many.”
It’s interesting for the first time in a while the four clubs of Harden, Coota, Boorowa and Young aren’t contesting the finals, and Condo is in there in 4th place which is a credit to them. The Semi Final will be held at Coota this Saturday at 3:15pm with the Tri Colours facing the Condobolin Rams. 3 v 4. Loser eliminated, winner plays loser of Boorowa v Harden.
