The Doug Gorrel trained Keep Me Posted took out the 2021 Miller and James Real Estate Picnic Cup over 1400 metres on Saturday. There wasn’t much separating Keep Me Posted and the Scott Spackman trained Cryfowl, whose picnic Cup form is very solid.

Keep me posted held Cryfowl out to claim the win by just 0.1 lengths with Opera Tickets coming in third just 1.19 length further afield. The 8 year old bay gelding returned to form after finishing 6 of 9 at Moruya on April 3.

Prior to that race he was impressive when he took out a 1600 metre race at Queanbeyan where he collected $5,850. He has been an honest horse for Gorrel with 56 starts for 6 wins, 4 second placings and 4 thirds placing.

It was fantastic weather for the picnic meeting across the 5 race card.

President Di Williams said, “ It got a little breezy but we opened the gates at 12 and people were lining up to come in. People were very keen to get out and about and see family and friends they have not seen for a long time. We had pre booked tables and the marquees out alone the straight this year, the music was from 12:30.” It has been a huge effort for the small committee with Di still putting the finishing touches on the big day as the gates opened before she could change in to her formal clothes. “It was so good to see people so keen to get out, with 1000-1500 when the last meeting was1500.”

The first place was removed from the day’s proceedings which saw the first running of the ‘Golden Slipper’ foot race. The barriers were brought around and set at a distance of 100 metres from the finish line. Mick Donoghue and Richie Coulton stepped in to provide the foot race which was ladies and mens and mixed age groups.

Stephanie Wong did a great job in fashions on the field with some very colourful suits worn on the day. Planning will commence for next year with a ‘wash up’ meeting set down in the next couple of weeks.

Di said, “We had some bucks parties and there was a leopard skin outfit.” Although CGRC Councillor Gil Kelly upped the ante with a great outfit he was unable to win the best dressed award in a stunning green number. Di stressed to the township and our readers that the Picnics is run by a very small committee and that they are always looking for volunteers. Racing NSW has provided guidance in how to break down some of the roles so that the load isn’t as heavy as it could be. ”

Di said, “Everyone is working, everyone is busy.” The Turf Club were very helpful for the 2021 meeting and Di thanks them for their assistance. Race 1 saw Danetree Belle beat home Thuwaany and Uno Best to claim the Twin Hill Stud Trophy Handicap over 800 metres. Race 2 saw the Scott Spackman trained Tate first past the post in the Dawson and Partner Maiden Plate with Oromcto 2 lengths behind, with daylight for the 3rd placed horse. Race 3 saw Hail The Hero home by the slimmest of margins in the Riverna LivestocksAgents Class 3 Trophy Handicap over 1200 metres.

Hail The Hero defeated Overcharged by just 0.06 lengths with Better Strike in third. Race 4 was the Geature race won by Keep Me Posted while Race 5 saw Madison Point carry 64.5 kilograms to take home the Class 2 trophy Handicap over 1400 metres. Zenyasa finished second with Rheingau claiming 3rd.
