The Cootamundra township came alive on ANZAC Day with a huge crowd turning out to commemorate those who fought and fell to protect our country.
Organisers rallied the marching participants out the front of the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Parker Street and formed up before the march travelled north, turning right on to Bourke Street, before arriving at the Memorial.
The service was officiated by Melissa Vincent and the wreaths began to flow from dozens of local organisations and sporting teams as well as the local Council.
The catafalque was present and as impressive as ever with their sombre, controlled stance and ability to work in unison.
Several slouch hats were placed on the memorial by 256 Army Cadet Unit before a number of school captains offered small speeches and prayers.
They included Sacred Heart, E.A. Southee and Coota Public School. The hymn ‘Lead Kindly Light’ was sung before the commemoration Address.
The sound of a Spitfire Airplane could be heard in the distance and it buzzed and roared over the top of the service at exactly 11:00 am to the joy of the crowd.
The much loved ‘Abide with Me’ hymn was sung before Advance Australia Fair rang out.
The service came to a close and many of those attending returned to the Ex-Servicemen’s Club for refreshments.
