The Cootamundra Junior Soccer Club is pleased they made the decision to enter their under 14 and under 16 teams in the Wagga competition this year. Both sides are playing a high standard of soccer and improving in each game.
The younger soccer age groups are also enjoying their start to the season.
In another bonus for the sport in town, the Sports Stadium will host a five week indoor soccer competition for players aged 6-11.
The competition starts on Monday May 23, with games running from 4-6pm.
Teams will be made up of eight players and must have a parent manager each week.
There will be a final held to finish the season.
More information can be obtained from the Leisure and Recreation staff at the sports stadium or swimming pool.
Representative rugby league was played at Tom Clyburn Oval in Canowindra last weekend with the annual fixture between the Woodbridge Cup and George Tooke Shield (GTS) competitions.
Three games were played – seniors, Under 18’s and League Tag in front of a good crowd that witnessed an excellent standard of rugby league.
In the seniors, there was an exciting 22 all draw, showing the similarities between the standard of football in both competitions.
Earlier in the day the talented GTS league tag team won 32 -4 in a great display whilst the youth league Under 18s game saw both sides play attacking footy with a strong 40-16 win to the GTS team, making it a successful day for the local competition.
Several Cootamundra players took part in these representative games and performed well. Players and parents of the Junior Bulldogs and Coota Bears players had a “double-header” at Tumut last weekend.
The rugby league juniors were at Tumut on Saturday and many of them backed up on Sunday for the junior rugby gala day held in the same town.
Despite wet weather leading up to the weekend grounds were suitable for play and both days were deemed a success.
The Cootamundra Bears will host the first of their three Gala Days for 2022 on Sunday June 5.
The local derby in country sport has always been a highlight for players and supporters and the Cootamundra Tricolours 16-0 win over the Harden Red Devils last weekend illustrated this fact.
In Wagga, Ag College defeated Waratahs in the annual Col Cup fixture, much to the delight of a parochial “Aggies” crowd at Beres Ellwood Oval. Cootamundra’s sporting history:
May 1962: In the local paper the “Sportsmen of the Week” were named for the month of May – talented horseman Garry Watson, rugby league centre Clive Stephens, golfer Keith Kirley and junior basketballers Peter Faulkiner, David Brettell and Frank Walker.
May 1972: Cootamundra’s golfing legend Ralph Rowe was made a Life Member of the Cootamundra Country Club, in due recognition of his achievements on the golf course over many years. It was a very popular decision and welcomed by members.
May 1982/83: Cootamundra Country Club bowler Don Manwaring was elected president of the South West District Bowling Association and became the first Cootamundra president in 26 years.
May 1992: Tony Manning became only the second Cootamundra cyclist to win the prestigious Bob Patterson Road Race at Coolamon. More success was to follow for local cyclists when Bill Teale won the Butch Menz Road Race held at The Rock in a courageous performance.
May 2002: Cootamundra Town Tennis Club A-Grade mixed competition final was won by Chapmans with a convincing 43-25 win over Willises. Members of the winning team were John Malone, Leane Clee, Col Murray and John Chapman.
